Loonie Hits 18-Month Low: What It Means for Miners

Canada's September jobs report landed on Friday, October 9, and it was a shock. The economy lost jobs for a second straight month, traders pulled back bets on a Bank of Canada rate hike, and the Canadian dollar fell to its weakest level against the US dollar since April 2025. For miners, that currency move matters more than the jobs number itself. Here is how it touches hardware costs, power bills and financing in Canada, the US and the UAE.

What happened on October 9

According to Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey, employment fell by 68,000 (-0.3%) in September and the unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 6.5%. That followed a loss of about 42,000 jobs in August. Reuters, via BNN Bloomberg, reported that analysts had expected a gain of 9,200 jobs, and that Canada has now lost a net 41,200 jobs so far in 2026, compared with a gain of 211,300 over the same period of 2025.

The market reaction was fast:

  • Currency: the loonie fell as much as 0.5% to 1.4299 per US dollar, its weakest level since April 2025, Bloomberg reported in the Financial Post. FXStreet notes USD/CAD has climbed from just above 1.3750 on September 8.
  • Rates: money markets stopped pricing a Bank of Canada hike at the October 28 meeting but still expect a 25 basis point increase in December, per Reuters. The policy rate is 2.25%.
  • The gap with the US: the US Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75%-4.00% in September, and the minutes released October 7 say most officials see another increase as likely appropriate by year end. FXStreet points to that 1.5-point-plus rate gap as the driver of the loonie's slide since early September.

Why a weak loonie matters to miners

Hardware is priced in US dollars

Many ASIC miners are priced in US dollars, and NORTH MINER lists prices in USD too. When the loonie weakens, the same machine costs more in Canadian dollars. Simple arithmetic: a US$10,000 order works out to about C$13,750 at September's 1.3750 rate, and about C$14,299 at Friday's 1.4299. That is roughly C$550, or 4%, more for an identical machine in about a month, before shipping, duties or taxes. If you are comparing a unit like the Canaan Avalon A16XP-300T or the MicroBT WhatsMiner M7D, check the exchange rate your bank or card will actually apply on the day you pay, not the mid-market rate on a chart.

Revenue is in BTC, but most Canadian costs are in CAD

The other side of the ledger works the opposite way. Bitcoin trades globally in US dollar terms, while a Canadian miner's electricity bill, rent and wages are paid in Canadian dollars. A weaker loonie means each coin converts to more Canadian dollars, which mechanically improves the CAD value of mining revenue relative to CAD-denominated costs. This is not a forecast: it holds only at current exchange rates and can be wiped out by moves in BTC price or network difficulty. But currency belongs in any Canadian mining spreadsheet, next to your power rate.

Energy is the wildcard

The Financial Post report notes that the ongoing war in the Middle East has been pushing energy prices higher, and Desjardins' Royce Mendes said in a note quoted by Reuters that he expects higher energy prices to start feeding other categories of inflation this fall. For miners, power is the biggest operating cost. If you are on a variable or market-linked rate, review your contract terms now. If you would rather not carry that exposure at home, compare it against a fixed hosting arrangement; see our hosting page for what that involves.

What it means by region

Canada

Two forces pull in different directions: USD-priced hardware got more expensive in CAD, while BTC revenue converts to more CAD. Borrowing costs may hold steady longer than markets expected a week ago, though December remains live. If you are financing equipment, the dates to watch are Canada's September CPI later this month and the October 28 decisions from both the Bank of Canada and the Fed.

United States

US buyers are not affected by the CAD move, but US rates are rising. FXStreet also reports that the University of Michigan sentiment index fell to 46.3 on Friday while year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7%.

UAE

The UAE dirham is pegged to the US dollar, so USD-priced hardware costs the same in dirhams regardless of what the loonie does. UAE buyers mainly need to watch US rate decisions and energy prices.

Practical checklist

  • Run your numbers in the currency you pay costs in. For Canadians, convert both hardware price and expected revenue to CAD at a realistic bank rate.
  • Stress-test your plan at several exchange rates and power prices, not just today's.
  • Compare efficiency (J/TH) across the Bitcoin SHA-256 lineup; when power costs are uncertain, efficiency matters more.
